Briar Rose (Sleeping Beauty) by Sexton Anne: read poem | Full text

The king ordered every spinning wheel

exterminated and exorcised.

Briar Rose grew to be a goddess

and each night the king

bit the hem of her gown

to keep her safe.

He fastened the moon up

with a safety pin

to give her perpetual light

He forced every male in the court

to scour his tongue with Bab-o

lest they poison the air she dwelt in.

Thus she dwelt in his odor.

Rank as honeysuckle.

‘The prince then braves the tall trees, brambles and thorns which part at his approach, and enters the castle. He passes the sleeping castle folk and comes across the chamber where the Princess lies asleep on the bed. Struck by the radiant and unmatched beauty before him, he falls on his knees before her. The spell is broken.’
